A Competitive Cornhole Player's Journey

Apr 03, 2024

Let's talk about a competitive cornhole player's journey...

STEP ONE: When first starting out the goal is to get a flat, spinning bag. If you decide you don't care about a flat spinning bag you could easily make it to steps 2 and 3 but step 4 will be difficult. So I recommend staying on step 1 until you get proper mechanics. As you are in this learning phase your PPR is probably between a 2 to a 5.

STEP TWO: The next step is finding your line and distance. This is the part most people want to skip over. This. Takes. Reps. There's no way around it. You have to teach your arm what to do. Muscle memory will kick in and you will have a nice automated throw you can count on... most of the time. In this phase, your PPR will probably be between a 4-7.

STEP THREE: Now is the tough part... getting that consistent and predictable throw to happen no matter what. This is where I come in. If you are on step 1 or 2, you're probably too early to work with me on your mental game. But once you have PPR ceilings in the 9s and 10s with low floors we have probably hit your first mental hurdle. Time to turn your attention to your mental/emotional state. Your PPR can hit as high as 10/11 here but can also have lows in the 5s which is incredibly frustrating.

STEP FOUR: This is when you've moved into mastery. Maybe it's mastery of the slide shot and that's it. Still a great start. And guess what, for every new shot you learn you start back at step one. Perhaps your journey is quicker with other shots. Your floor won't be as low here, probably aren't throwing below an 8 until... You try and learn a new shot and then you lose the automation of your slide shot. Don't worry, you didn't lose it. Just have to go back to step 2 and rep it out. Then you'll easily coast back to step 4.

If you're on step 3 and can't get to step 4 consistently I am here to help!
