Confidence in Cornhole: Why Connection Beats Pep Talks Every Time
Oct 16, 2025
Confidence Isn’t About Killing Nerves
Confidence isn’t about pretending you’re never nervous. Real confidence is about being connected enough to yourself that you trust your body when it matters most.
Take Simone Biles, one of the greatest gymnasts in the world. She faced a terrifying challenge called the Twisties — a disconnection between her mind and body midair. To overcome it, she went back to basics. She rebuilt trust with herself, starting from the simplest elements she could perform consistently, until she could step back into her full power.
That same principle applies to cornhole players.
The Cornhole Version of the Twisties
In our game, the “Twisties” often look like the yips golfers describe. Bags flying left and right. Sliding off the back. Feeling like you’ve forgotten how to throw — even though you know you’re better than this.
And when confidence wavers, most players try pep talks: “Come on, you’ve got this. Focus.” But the problem is, you can’t think your way into confidence. Confidence isn’t built in your head — it’s built in your body.
How to Rebuild Confidence on the Boards
The fastest way to restore confidence mid-game is to go back to your basics.
-
If your fancy airmails aren’t landing, switch to your most reliable slide shot.
-
If even that feels shaky, focus only on hitting your landing spot.
-
And if that’s still too much pressure, break it down further: just get the bag on the board.
That’s not playing small — that’s rebuilding trust with yourself, one throw at a time. And sometimes, aiming for the board ends up giving you the hole anyway.
Connection is the Key
When you’re spiraling, you’re disconnected. The fix isn’t more mechanics or mental chatter — it’s reconnecting.
You can:
-
Take a deep breath and feel your feet on the ground.
-
Notice the bag in your hand.
-
Look around the room and anchor into the moment: I see the boards. I see the bags. I see the people here with me.
Connection pulls you out of fear and frustration and places you back into the only place performance can happen: right now.
Confidence isn’t “I’ll never miss.” Confidence is “I trust myself enough to throw this bag, right here, right now.”
Final Thought
Whether you’re on a backyard board or in a national tournament, your path to confidence will always run through connection. Start with what you know, trust your basics, and stay in the moment. From there, confidence grows bag by bag.
